I Have A New Hobby

I kind of have a new hobby now. Just what I needed... Great...

I took a tapestry weaving class in Brooklyn this past weekend taught by Maryann Moodie, and it was fantastic! I highly recommend it to anyone who's nearby and thinking of taking up weaving. I'd toyed with the idea of teaching myself like I did with knitting and quilting, but I couldn't find a lot of information about it aside from a book, so I thought the class was a good idea. And I was right! So, so, so glad I went :)

The three hours flew by, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Gorgeous flowers, yummy baked goods and mimosas (I didn't partake but I was told they were delish), plus you're surrounded by people who are interested in the same thing as you are! I made a few new friends too, which was so lovely :) We played a game of Guess Who's The Oldest At This Table and as usual, I nailed it. Should've put some money on that hahaha!

Look at this gorgeousness by Maryann! Inspiration and something to work toward! She had quite a few pieces hanging in the class space but I think this was my favourite of them all.

Look at my first bit of weaving!!! Thank goodness we get to keep the loom and all the materials because I didn't get really far in class. I kind of kept ripping stuff out because I just can't help myself... I do it with quilting, so why wouldn't I be that way with weaving hehe

I got hooked immediately, and I spent that night in the hotel weaving away till the wee hours. And when I came home, that's the first thing I did after I cooked dinner lol Can you say... Obsessive???

And this is my first finished piece! I'm quite proud of myself for having actually made something that looks pretty good on my first try. Most of it was just me trying different things and techniques, while hoping not to run out of yarn hehe!

My sister (she actually wanted this one but I think I've got to keep my first piece!) and a couple of friends have already ordered pieces lol I've still got a lot to learn and need to get better before I get to that... I'm super impatient with stuff like that and I just want to get better NOW NOW NOW. I dove head first into quilting, so I'm guessing there'll be a yarn explosion in my studio shortly :)

Oh that's fantastic that you've been to Maryanne's class already! It sounds like it was a really great and fun class. Love Maryanne's creation that you shared a pic of, and your first piece looks awesome! Can you sit and weave in front of the TV, or take it out as a portable project, like hexagons or crochet? - that way it's not like it's really taking time away from quilting, I reckon, so it's the perfect new hobby. Audrie! First, why do I feel the need to shout your name whenever I see this weaving piece? And second, you totally nailed this. I knew you would be a natural at your new hobby, but this piece really blows me away. I hope you have my name on your wait list! I love the colors and the design, it is perfect! And it looks great hanging, too. Way to go!

It looks gorgeous, do not give it away! :))) And now comes the time when you can start building your yarn stash, in case you didn't have enough fabrics :D
